Hello,

My name is Shena Kaye and im the owner of Poetic Images based in Perrysburg, OH. First i would like to say how outstanding it is to find such a group here.

Well, my business is photography and we specialize in photo documentaries and fashion. We cover weddings, as we consider them documenting a day in a families life, yet 75% of my clients are non-profit orgs. I shoot medical documentaries and I follow children as they undergo life saving surgeries provided by top surgeons at no cost to their families. One may ask how that would help a nonprofit...well my images are used in books, fund raisers, Grant presentations, newsletters and much more. I build awareness to the public community of what these nonprofits do to change the lives of these children and their families. I also follow disaster aid documenting floods, storms and the aftermath. these specific images help raise money to continue the efforts in helping rebuild what was lost.
My next big non-profit assignment we are preparing for is a two part medical/surgical photo documentary ill be shooting in Honduras for ISOH/IMPACT. We leave for part one June 6th...it will be quite the experience. The photos well be outstanding.

Im currently trying to find a way to create a non-profit section of my company to service only non-profit clients. my goal then is to begin a funding source within my company to help cover MY costs so I can provide quality coverage for them at low or no cost to the nonprofit organization. I want to keep the money they raise to go forth to their cause and not on me taking the proof of what they do. there have been many times we have run into real problems with budgets and it hurts me knowing I can get the job done they need, yet they cant afford the service. (I have found myself doing projects for free to help them but its starting to hurt me financially.) that is when I began the plan to start a non-profit for non-profits.
If I can't get a non-profit in place within my own company then I will make special bracket of pricing just for them to cut their costs.

On the fashion side I shoot fashion shows and designer clothing lines. I have done private portrait sessions and some of those images have gone on to win international awards, so that makes me happy...only my heart runs strongly with the power of what I can do for other in the nonprofit sector.

now that I have written you a book on what I do professionally let me end with a little about me personally. Im a mother of two children and wife to a wonder full man who works so hard I hardly see him. (no punn intended...he is really gone months at a time...lol.)and im currently trying very hard to prove to my darling husband that my business is worth more then he thinks. I may not be bringing in a million for him so he don't have to work...but im making a mark and I love what I do. that is enough for me...right now...heheee.

thank you for reading about me. I can't wait to get to know all of you and hopefully we can provide each other some wonderful leads to new clients. im an excellent promoter so tell me all about you.

yours professionally,

Welcome to the network, Shena.

I just visited your website. Beautiful images. Wow.

As a niche person, I always encourage business owners to get known for "one thing" that they are truly expert in... and that makes their heart sing.

Your wedding work is beautiful, but it sounds like you enjoy the non-profit documentaries even more.

Could you become the expert in fund-raising videos and photos? In other words, sell your work as a fund-raising tool upfront, rather than "my work has been used in fund-raising."

With the economy cutting back on charitable donations just now, the non-profits can use all the help they can get. On the other hand, many of them DO have funds for advertising/marketing. That's where you come in... as a marketing investment, rather than as a fringe item.

Maybe even specializing in short YouTube-type videos emphasizing different parts of the organizations' work. Instead of using telemarketers to raise money, how about heartfelt videos?

This isn't your high-end work; you'd be doing that for the larger organizations who do have funds to work with. But for the small ones where you're now donating your services... maybe you could teach them some how-to's (and document that, so you can sell/donate the training videos to other groups).

You could consider offering "small, medium and large" options in the non-profit work, the same as you do in your weddings. People without $5,000 - 10,000 plus for a documentary will have $100-200 for a class on YouTube video creation for fundraising purposes.

Not just non-profits would attend that... It could provide the income source you're looking for to establish your "reserve fund" for longer non-profit documentaries.

Cheers,
Barbara

Barbara,

Your mind is just the type I love to surround myself with. I love idea makers, dreamers...seasoned go getters. I have been working on a price structure to help nonprofits where they still save and I make something rather then allowing myself to dig bigger holes.

Your idea on the classes is a good one although I would not know how to go about that. That is why I love others around me with flowing minds.

I seem to be good at networking with companies and making things work out for everyone else but me...lol. I love to build other people and watch them grow mentally, physically, financially and if I can help...successfully in their field. No matter what I do I gain friends and name recognition yet my personal financial growth with my company is stuck.

Any idea or suggestions I will take and make it happen.

thanks for reading and replying.
